It works by blocking calcineurin, an enzyme that activates T-cells and triggers the release of inflammatory cytokines in the skin, helping reduce redness, itching, and swelling. Because it does not affect collagen or cause skin thinning, it’s a good option for long-term or maintenance therapy when topical steroids are not ideal. A temporary burning or warm sensation may occur when treatment is first started but usually improves with continued use.
