Pimecrolimus Cream 1%

Alternative Names: Elidel

Pimecrolimus is a prescription, non-steroidal topical medication used to treat mild to moderate eczema, particularly on sensitive areas like the face, eyelids, and skin folds. It works by blocking calcineurin, an enzyme that activates T-cells and triggers the release of inflammatory cytokines in the skin, helping reduce redness, itching, and swelling. Because it does not affect collagen or cause skin thinning, it’s a good option for long-term or maintenance therapy when topical steroids are not ideal. A temporary burning or warm sensation may occur when treatment is first started but usually improves with continued use.

Treatment Type: Prescription Medication

Treatment Class: Calcineurin inhibitor

Treatment Modality: Topical

Pimecrolimus works well for controlling mild to moderate eczema, especially in sensitive areas like the face and skin folds where steroids aren’t ideal. It reduces redness and itching without causing skin thinning, making it useful for longer-term or maintenance treatment.

If I'm getting an eczema flare up (near the eyes) this will not provide immediate relief. However, continued daily usage seems to help with reducing eczema flare ups.
