VTAMA, also known as tapinarof cream 1%, is a steroid-free prescription cream used to treat plaque psoriasis in adults. It works through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway, which helps calm skin inflammation and improve the skin barrier. VTAMA is typically applied as a thin layer once daily to the affected areas. Because it is not a steroid, it may be useful for longer-term treatment and for areas where steroid side effects, such as skin thinning, are a concern. It can be used on plaques in many body areas, but patients should avoid using it in the eyes, mouth, or inside the vagina. Possible side effects include folliculitis, skin irritation or rash, itching, headache, cold-like symptoms, or flu-like symptoms.
