Tacrolimus

Alternative Names: Protopic

Tacrolimus, also known by the brand name Protopic, is a non-steroid prescription ointment that may be used off-label for certain types of psoriasis. It may be a first-choice option for psoriasis in sensitive areas such as the face, groin, genitals, armpits, or skin folds, where long-term steroid use can cause thinning of the skin. Tacrolimus works by calming inflammation in the skin and may reduce redness, itching, and irritation. It is generally not the first choice for thick plaques on areas like the elbows, knees, or scalp because it may not penetrate those areas as well. Some people notice mild burning or stinging when they first apply it, but this often improves with continued use.
