Pimecrolimus works by calming inflammation in the skin and may help reduce redness, itching, and irritation. It is generally not the first choice for thick plaques on areas like the elbows, knees, or scalp because it may not penetrate heavy scale as well as stronger topical treatments. Some people may notice mild burning, warmth, or stinging when they first apply it, especially on irritated skin.
