Hydrocortisone
Hydrocortisone is a low-potency topical steroid that can be used for psoriasis, especially in sensitive areas like the face, groin, genitals, armpits, or skin folds. It may help reduce redness, itching, and inflammation, but it is usually too weak for thick plaques on areas like the elbows, knees, hands, feet, or scalp. For those thicker areas, stronger prescription topical steroids or other psoriasis treatments are usually more effective. Hydrocortisone can be useful as a short-term first choice in delicate areas because it has a lower risk of skin thinning than stronger steroids. Even so, it should not be overused, especially on the face or groin, because prolonged steroid use can still cause skin thinning, stretch marks, acne-like bumps, or irritation.
