Honey

Honey is a natural remedy commonly used to help soothe cough and throat irritation associated with the common cold. It works by coating the throat, which can reduce coughing and relieve soreness. Honey has mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may provide additional comfort. It can be taken alone or mixed with warm water or tea, especially before bedtime. Honey should not be given to children under 1 year of age due to the risk of botulism.

Honey is a well-supported, evidence-based option for symptomatic relief of upper respiratory infections, particularly cough and throat irritation. Its demulcent and antimicrobial properties help soothe inflamed mucosa and may reduce cough frequency, especially at night. It is a safe, effective first-line option for adults and children over one year of age.

I mixed 2 tablespoon of honey with 170 deg to boiling water and a tea bag. The honey doesn't prevent coughing from upper respiratory infection. However, when the respiratory infection comes with a long-term (2-4 weeks) severe post nasal drip, the coughing can irritate and severely hurt the throat and lungs. By using honey 2-4 times per day, I got through the 4 weeks without any serious pain from the constant coughing.
