Trimix contains 3 drugs: papaverine (a vasodilator) and phentolamine (an alpha-blocker), alprostadil (prostaglandin E1), which directly increases penile blood flow.

These mixtures are injected directly into the base or side of the penis with a very small needle, producing an erection typically within 5–20 minutes, independent of sexual stimulation. They can be very effective but require careful dosing to avoid prolonged erections (priapism), penile pain, or scar tissue formation.
