Selegiline (Eldepryl®, Zelapar®) is a MAO-B inhibitor used in Parkinson’s disease to slow the breakdown of dopamine in the brain. It can be prescribed alone in early stages for mild symptom relief or added to levodopa to help reduce “wearing-off” fluctuations. Selegiline may provide modest improvements in motor symptoms and daily functioning, though it is generally less potent than other therapies. Common side effects include insomnia, nausea, dizziness, and headache, and it should be taken earlier in the day to avoid sleep problems. While not a first-line treatment, selegiline can be a helpful adjunct for managing Parkinson’s symptoms.
