Ruconest

Alternative Names: C1 esterase inhibitor (recombinant)

Ruconest is a recombinant (non–human plasma) C1 esterase inhibitor used to treat acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE). Unlike Berinert and Cinryze, which are derived from human plasma, Ruconest is produced using recombinant technology in genetically engineered rabbits, making it plasma-free and reducing the risk of viral transmission.

It works by replacing the deficient or malfunctioning C1-INH protein, which helps control inflammation and prevents excessive production of bradykinin, the substance responsible for swelling in HAE. Ruconest is given by intravenous (IV) injection, usually at the first signs of an attack, to quickly reduce symptoms.

It is not used for routine prevention (prophylaxis), only for on-demand treatment of acute episodes. The most common side effects include headache, nausea, and mild infusion-related reactions.
