Radiofrequency ablation
Alternative Names: RFA
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive option for meralgia paresthetica in patients with persistent pain that does not respond to conservative treatments or injections. The procedure uses heat generated by radiofrequency energy to disrupt pain signals from the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, usually performed with image guidance for accuracy. RFA can provide longer-lasting pain relief than steroid injections, often for several months or longer. Sensation in the outer thigh may decrease or feel altered after the procedure, which is usually well tolerated. Complications are uncommon but can include temporary soreness, numbness, or incomplete pain relief.
