Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are tiny little devices that doctors put in your tear ducts (the small holes in the corners of your eyelids). These tear ducts normally drain your tears away, kind of like a sink drain. When you have dry eyes, your tears disappear too fast—so the doctor puts in a punctal plug to block the drain and help your natural tears stay on your eyes longer.
You can’t really see or feel the plugs, and putting them in doesn’t hurt. Some plugs are temporary and dissolve over time, while others stay in longer.
