Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic ointment commonly used to prevent or treat bacterial infection in lacerations and minor wounds. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, effectively targeting organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus species. Mupirocin is applied directly to the wound after cleaning and may be covered with a sterile dressing. It is typically used 2–3 times daily for 5–10 days, depending on healing and clinical judgment.
