Loperamide is an over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medication that works by slowing movement in the intestines. During opioid withdrawal, it is commonly used to control diarrhea, which can otherwise cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Although loperamide acts on opioid receptors in the gut, it does not cross into the brain at normal doses, so it does not relieve cravings or other withdrawal symptoms. It is generally safe when taken as directed, but misuse at high doses can cause serious heart rhythm problems. In withdrawal management, loperamide is considered a helpful supportive treatment alongside other medications that target cravings and systemic symptoms.
