Lofexidine
Lofexidine is a non-opioid medication approved specifically to reduce the symptoms of opioid withdrawal. Like clonidine, it is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that calms overactivity in the nervous system, helping with sweating, chills, anxiety, agitation, and insomnia. It does not reduce cravings or replace opioids, but it can make the withdrawal process more manageable. Compared to clonidine, lofexidine has a lower risk of causing dangerously low blood pressure, making it somewhat safer in detox settings. It is usually prescribed for short-term use during the acute withdrawal phase, often alongside counseling or transition to longer-term treatments like buprenorphine or methadone.
