Atrovent, the brand name for ipratropium bromide, is a short-acting anticholinergic bronchodilator primarily used for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but it also has a role in asthma management, especially in the emergency setting. It works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the airways, leading to bronchodilation and reduced mucus production. In asthma, Atrovent is often used in combination with albuterol during acute exacerbations to enhance bronchodilation. It is delivered via inhaler or nebulizer, and while it is not a first-line therapy for chronic asthma control, it is helpful in severe cases or when beta-agonists alone are insufficient. Its onset of action is slower than albuterol, but the effects are complementary.
