Imiquimod is a topical immune-stimulating cream that helps the body recognize and attack cells infected by HPV, the virus that causes warts. It is most commonly used for genital warts, but may be prescribed off-label for stubborn common or plantar warts that have not responded to standard treatments. The cream is typically applied several times per week, and improvement may take weeks to months as the immune response builds. Redness, irritation, or crusting at the treatment site is common, reflecting the immune activity. Because it is more costly and slower-acting than salicylic acid or cryotherapy, it is generally reserved for resistant or recurrent warts.
