Firazyr is a medication used to treat acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults 18 years and older. Its generic name is icatibant, and it works by blocking the bradykinin B2 receptor, which prevents bradykinin from causing the swelling and pain associated with HAE attacks. Unlike C1-INH products, Firazyr directly targets the bradykinin pathway rather than replacing the missing enzyme. It is given as a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection, usually in the abdomen, and can often be self-administered by trained patients. Firazyr acts quickly to reduce swelling and relieve symptoms, and can be repeated if symptoms return after several hours.
