Fluvoxamine

Alternative Names: Luvox

Fluvoxamine is an antidepressant (SSRI) that has shown promising early evidence for treating long COVID, particularly fatigue. A 2026 randomized controlled trial in nearly 400 patients found that people taking fluvoxamine had meaningful reductions in fatigue and improved quality of life over 2–3 months, making it the strongest psychiatric medication evidence so far for established long COVID symptoms. These benefits are thought to come from its anti-inflammatory effects and action on the sigma-1 receptor, which may help regulate immune and stress responses.

Treatment Type: Prescription Medication

Treatment Class: SSRI

Treatment Modality: Oral

Fluvoxamine has some of the stronger emerging evidence for Long COVID fatigue. A 2026 randomized trial found that fluvoxamine 100 mg twice daily modestly improved fatigue and quality of life compared with placebo, with benefits still present at 90 days. This was the first adequately powered study to directly evaluate fluvoxamine for established Long COVID rather than acute COVID infection. Current Long COVID guidance also lists fluvoxamine as a medication under investigation for brain fog and cognitive symptoms.
