Etanercept
Alternative Names: Enbrel
Etanercept (brand name Enbrel) is a biologic DMARD that, like adalimumab, blocks tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) to reduce the inflammation that drives rheumatoid arthritis. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection, usually once or twice weekly, and is commonly used in patients with moderate to severe RA who have not responded adequately to methotrexate or other DMARDs. Etanercept can help prevent joint damage, improve mobility, and reduce flare frequency. Side effects are similar to other TNF inhibitors—injection site reactions and an increased risk of infections—and patients must be screened for tuberculosis or hepatitis before starting therapy.
Treatment Type: Prescription Medication
Treatment Class: Anti TNF alpha
Treatment Modality: Injection
