Dihydroergotamine
Alternative Names: DHE
Dihydroergotamine (DHE) is an ergot alkaloid used to treat moderate to severe migraine attacks, especially when triptans are ineffective. It is available in IV, intranasal, or subcutaneous forms and works by constricting dilated blood vessels and inhibiting neurogenic inflammation. DHE is not used for prevention and is typically reserved for refractory or prolonged migraines, including status migrainosus. It should be avoided in patients with cardiovascular disease or during pregnancy due to vasoconstrictive effects.
