Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic primarily used for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, meaning patients who have not responded adequately to other antipsychotic medications. It works by affecting multiple neurotransmitter systems, including dopamine and serotonin, and is often considered the most effective option for reducing persistent hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. Clozapine can also lower the risk of suicidal behavior in schizophrenia. However, its use is limited by the risk of serious side effects such as agranulocytosis (a potentially dangerous drop in white blood cells), seizures, myocarditis, and significant weight gain or metabolic issues. Because of these risks, patients require regular blood monitoring while taking it.
