Amantadine is an antiviral medication that also has benefits in Parkinson’s disease by increasing dopamine release and blocking NMDA receptors. It can help improve motor symptoms and is especially useful for treating levodopa-induced dyskinesias. Amantadine may be prescribed alone in early disease for mild symptom relief or as an add-on in more advanced stages. Common side effects include ankle swelling, skin mottling (livedo reticularis), dizziness, and hallucinations.
