Abiraterone
Abiraterone is an oral medication used in combination with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and low-dose prednisone for treating metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). It works by inhibiting CYP17, an enzyme involved in androgen production, thereby further suppressing testosterone beyond standard ADT.
Abiraterone has been shown in major trials (e.g., LATITUDE, STAMPEDE) to significantly improve overall survival and delay disease progression in both high- and low-volume mHSPC. It is generally well-tolerated, but potential side effects include hypertension, liver function abnormalities, fluid retention, and low potassium, which is why prednisone is co-administered. It’s a preferred option for patients seeking an effective, non-chemotherapy alternative to docetaxel.
