Tirzepatide is a GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist originally developed for diabetes and weight loss that is now being studied as a potential treatment for long COVID. Its proposed benefit comes from broad anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects, including reduction in systemic and neuroinflammation, which are thought to play a role in symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and pain. Early observational reports and ongoing clinical trials suggest it may improve function and symptom burden in some patients, but it is not yet proven or FDA-approved for long COVID. Large randomized trials are underway to determine whether tirzepatide meaningfully improves outcomes and which patients may benefit most.
