Podophyllotoxin is an antimitotic medication that works by stopping wart cells from dividing, causing the tissue to gradually die and shed. It is primarily used for external genital warts and is not recommended for plantar or common warts on hands/feet. Treatment is usually applied by the patient at home following a cycle such as twice daily for 3 days, then 4 days off, repeated as needed. Skin irritation, redness, or mild burning can occur where the medication is applied. Because it can damage surrounding healthy skin and mucosa, patients should follow instructions carefully and avoid use on large areas.
