Clopidogrel
Alternative Names: Plavix
Clopidogrel (Plavix) is an effective antiplatelet medication for the prevention of recurrent ischemic stroke. It works by inhibiting platelet activation, which reduces the risk of new clot formation. Plavix can be used as an alternative to aspirin for long-term secondary prevention, especially in patients who are aspirin-intolerant. In some cases, it is combined with aspirin for a short course after a minor stroke or high-risk TIA to further reduce early recurrence. Its main limitation is an increased risk of bleeding, which requires careful patient selection.
