Heliox

Heliox (Helium-Oxygen mixture) is an adjunct therapy used in severe asthma exacerbations to improve airflow and reduce work of breathing in patients with significant airway obstruction.

It reduces airway resistance (due to lower gas density compared to room air), improves airflow in narrowed airways, making it easier to breathe, enhances medication delivery  and decreases work of breathing, reducing fatigue in respiratory distress.

Heliox can be useful in severe, near–end-stage asthma when airflow is critically limited and other treatments haven’t taken effect yet. It’s not always available, but when it is, the lighter gas mixture can improve airflow enough to buy time for medications to work and potentially avoid intubation. It’s a niche option, but sometimes a valuable one in the right setting.
