Staying at bedside

Description:

Staying by a loved one’s bedside in the hospital can be incredibly helpful in supporting their care and catching potential oversights. Here are some tips to help you stay informed and contribute effectively to their well-being:

  1. Get to Know the Care Team: Introduce yourself to nurses, doctors, and other care providers. Establishing rapport can help you feel more comfortable asking questions and following up.

  2. Keep a Notebook: Use it to record important information, like medication schedules, test results, and any instructions provided. This can also be useful if there’s a shift change and new staff need to be updated.

  3. Understand the Medication Schedule: Know what medications your loved one is receiving, including dosage and timing. This can help catch errors if there’s a delay or a mix-up.

  4. Ask About Procedures: Always confirm with staff what they’re doing and why before any procedure or test. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if something seems unclear.

  5. Verify Patient Identity: Remind the care team to check your loved one’s identification, especially before medications or procedures, as a safety check.

  6. Stay Informed About Symptoms and Care Plan: If your loved one is experiencing new symptoms or side effects, communicate this to the medical team immediately.

  7. Respect Staff and Partner in Care: Approach staff with respect, as they are essential allies in your loved one’s care. Working together helps ensure that your input is heard and acted on.

  8. Learn About Hospital Protocols: Understanding the hospital’s procedures and practices can help you navigate and communicate effectively with the medical team.

Your presence is a powerful advocate for your loved one, and being proactive can make a significant difference in their care experience.

One of the best ways to both keep informed and to advocate for your loved on.   Because of the complexity of a hospital system, mistakes easily happen.   This requires a lot of endurance because there usually is not a schedule when various consultations will occur.  And while most specialties will come by during normal business hours, some will come in after hours because of their day time clinics.
